Preparing appropriate audition materials in advance is key!
To prioritize students’ well-being during the COVID-19 outbreak and to reduce barriers for participation, students will submit a recorded video of their 2020-21 audition through an online portal. The main round of auditions was held from May 7 – June 1, but we are still accepting auditions to fill open positions on a rolling basis from now until August.
Auditionees need to prepare two items for the audition:
- Two scales of your choice: one major scale and one minor scale. Winds, brass, and percussion must also prepare a chromatic scale. You are free to choose which scales, but the difficulty, maturity, and range of your choices will affect scoring. Refer to the audition requirements below for recommended scales.
- String students auditioning for Philharmonia and Sinfonia, and wind students auditioning for Sinfonia and Concertino can find a list of scale references here.
- A short solo
- Students interested in being considered for Camerata, Concert Orchestra, Philharmonic, or Symphony must also prepare specific excerpts.
- Sight reading will not be required this year
To prepare for an audition, review the specific details, scale requirements, and excerpts for each instrument and orchestra level below. These guidelines were updated on April 13, 2020, and again on May 6, 2020, to reflect the change in the audition process.
