Maestro Smith and I are excited to announce that GTCYS will expand its programming next season to increase access for more young musicians.
By adding a new school-year orchestra – Concertino East – in fall 2020, new and current students will benefit from easier geographic access and a pathway that provides quality programming for beginning to intermediate musicians. Concertino East will serve students in the east metro and parallel our current Concertino, which will become Concertino West. This expansion marks GTCYS’ tenth orchestra and our third in the east metro.
Conductor Daniel Mollick will continue to lead Concertino West next year. This winter, we will carry out a public search for a Concertino East conductor. The conductor and other details, including the rehearsal location, will be announced this spring before 2020-21 auditions (please note that auditions will be held earlier this year: May 7 – 16, 2020). We also have openings for new students this year to audition on December 7.
The expansion reflects GTCYS’ deep commitment to broadening access and expanding programs to meet increased interest, rather than capping enrollment and turning students away. It is also a result of continued growth and momentum. Since 2011, enrollment has increased by 90% and need-based scholarships have quadrupled. This year, students will benefit from $150,000 in scholarships for tuition, private lessons, and Symphony’s tour.
While we are proud of GTCYS’ reach, the impact on our students is what matters most. By providing high-quality musical experiences, learning and leadership opportunities, and an inclusive culture, students develop lifelong skills they can apply in school and beyond. As a GTCYS alum shared upon graduating last spring, “GTCYS has taught me the value of hard work and the importance of community.”
We are incredibly grateful for the community of families, music educators, and donors who make these experiences possible. With your continued support, you can help open doors for more students than ever before. The future is bright!
